Belgvekster

En belgvekst, eller belgfrukt, er en frukt av en plante i erteblomstfamilien (Fabaceae). Kjente belgfrukter er alfalfa, kløvere, erter, bønner, linser, lupiner og peanøtter. Belger dannes fra ett fruktblad og åpner seg for å slippe frø ved å sprekke opp både i buksømmen og ryggsømmen. Belgvekster brukes både som dyrefôr og som menneskemat.

Belgvekster er spesielle da de fleste av dem lever i symbiose med nitrogenfikserende bakterier. De befinner seg i strukturer på rotknollene nede i jorda. På grunn av de nitrogenfikserende bakteriene spiller disse vekstene en viktig rolle i vekstrotasjonen på gårder.

The quality of leguminous vegetables as influenced by preharvest factors

The cultivation of most legumes, aims to the production of either dry seeds consumed by humans, also known as pulses, or animal fodder. However, some legumes are cultivated for fresh consumption either as pods or as immature seeds. The economically most important legumes consumed as vegetables are green pods of common bean, cowpea, faba bean, snow pea (mangetout) and green pea seeds. As a rule, the legume vegetables are consumed after cooking and in many countries, they may be used to cover primary nutritional needs, because their protein content is high in comparison with most other vegetables.

Could the artificial inoculation of AM fungi improve the benefits of using pea (Pissum sativum L) plants for soil amendment purposes in greenhouses?

The study aimed to investigate the effects of commercially available AMF inoculate (Glomus sp. mixture) on the growth and the nutrient acquisition of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants. Inoculated (AMF+) and non-inoculated (AMF-) pea plants were subjected to two levels of NaCl salinity (0 and 50 mM NaCl). Several times during the growing cycle, randomly selected plants were analyzed for dry matter of roots and the aboveground biomass. Plant tissue samples were analyzed for N, P and K concentration and the total uptake, specific absorption rate (SAR) and specific utilization rate (SUR) of these elements were calculated.

Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture

The 13th edition of the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture includes 14 articles of EUROLEGUME's scientific research in its 'In Focus' section.
In addition to the 14 articles, the 'In Focus' starts off with an editorial on 'Enhancing legume growing through sustainable cropping for protein supply' and a review on 'Cowpea: a legume crop for a challenging environment'.

Manure and tillage use in remediation of eroded land and impacts on soil chemical properties

Soil loss through wind and water erosion is an ongoing problem in semiarid regions. A thin layer of top soil loss over a hectare of cropland could be corresponding to tons of productive soil loss per hectare. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of beef feedlot manure, tillage and legume grass mixtures on changes in soil quality and nutrient components. The study was initiated in 2006 on an eroded site near Akron, Colorado, on a Norka-Colby very-fine sandy loam (fine-silty, mixed, mesic, Aridic, Argiustolls).

Food losses and waste in primary production

This project has resulted in a suggested definitional and methodological framework for future studies of food losses and waste in primary production. It has also resulted in a first attempt to quantify food losses and waste in primary production in the Nordic countries. This study was a pioneering study and requires further improvements as there are large uncertainties in the data presented.

Legumes for mitigation of climate change and the provision of feedstock for biofuels and biorefineries. A review

Humans are currently confronted by many global challenges. These include achieving food security for a rapidly expanding population, lowering the risk of climate change by reducing the net release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere due to human activity, and meeting the increasing demand for energy in the face of dwindling reserves of fossil energy and uncertainties about future reliability of supply. Legumes deliver several important services to societies. They provide important sources of oil, fiber, and protein-rich food and feed while supplying nitrogen (N) to agro-ecosystems via their unique ability to fix atmospheric N2 in symbiosis with the soil bacteria rhizobia, increasing soil carbon content, and stimulating the productivity of the crops that follow. However, the role of legumes has rarely been considered in the context of their potential to contribute to the mitigation of climate change by reducing fossil fuel use or by providing feedstock for the emerging biobased economies where fossil sources of energy and industrial raw materials are replaced in part by sustainable and renewable biomass resources.

The genetic improvement of forage grasses and legumes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Grasslands are one of the most important ecosystems and forms of land use in the world. They are crucial for food production and deliver ecosystem services. However, particularly when used for livestock production, they are also a significant source of pollution including the greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide. Energy inputs into grassland agriculture, particularly fertilisers, also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. A considerable amount of research has focused on emissions from grasslands: how to measure them and management strategies for mitigation. Similarly, there have been a number of studies on the role of grasslands in terms of carbon sequestration. However, less work has been carried out exploring ways in which genetic improvement of grassland crops can reduce emissions and enhance carbon sequestration. Plant breeding has been successful at increasing the yield, persistency and stress tolerance of the major grasses and legumes of many grasslands in the world. These same approaches have considerable potential in altering plant traits to enhance the ecological efficiency of grassland agriculture.

Belgvekster og alger som alternative proteinrike fôrmidler til sau (AltPro)

I prosjektet «Belgvekster og alger som alternative proteinrike fôrmidler til sau (AltPro)», skal forskerne i NIBIO sammen med kollegaer fra Nordlandsforskning, Aarhus Universitet (Danmark), FiBL (Sveits) og CSIC (Spania) undersøke fôrets påvirkning på dyras fordøyelse, utslipp av klimagassen metan, motstandsdyktighet mot parasitter og bondens holdninger til fôrtypene.

Belgvekster og rhizobier i Søretiopia; utnyttelse av mikrosymbionten for et bærekraftig jordbruk 2007-2012

I dette prosjektet planlegger vi å undersøke uutforskede ressurser innenfor biologisk mangfold  og utvikle en innovativ utnyttelse av belgfrukter og deres plantevekstfremmende bakterier i bærekraftig jordbruk der bønder vil bli introdusert for nye måter å øke produksjonen.

Proteinrike engbelgvekster under ulike dyrkings- og klimaforhold 2010-2014
