Suppression of the activity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi by the soil microbiota

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Jordbiologi, Matjord, Sopp

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonise roots of most plants; their extra-radical mycelium (ERM) extends into the soil and acquires nutrients for the plant. The ERM coexists with soil microbial communities and it is unresolved whether these communities stimulate or suppress the ERM activity. This work studied the prevalence of suppressed ERM activity and identified main components behind the suppression.

Organic farming enhances soil microbial abundance and activity—A meta-analysis and meta-regression

Population growth and climate change challenge our food and farming systems and provide arguments for an increased intensification of agriculture. A promising option is eco-functional intensification through organic farming, an approach based on using and enhancing internal natural resources and processes to secure and improve agricultural productivity, while minimizing negative environmental impacts.

PRINCIPLES FOR HIGH FUNCTIONING SOILS

Soil health is the continued capacity of a soil to function as a vital, living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans. Only living things can have “health,” so viewing soil as a living, breathing ecosystem reflects a shift in the way we view and manage our nation’s soils. Soil isn’t an inert growing medium, but rather is the home of billions of bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that together create an intricate symbiotic ecosystem. This ecosystem can be managed to support plants and animals, by cycling nutrients, absorbing, draining and retaining rainwater and snowmelt for use during dry periods, filtering and buffering water to remove potential pollutants, and providing habitat for the soil biological population to flourish and diversify to keep the ecosystem functioning well.

Jordsmonnstatistikk Norge

This report presents soil statistics for agricultural land in Norway. Soil data from the soil survey form the basis of the statistics. The survey is done as a sample survey on 0.9 km2 plots, in a predefined 9x9 km2 grid system. Hence, the statistics for Norway is an estimate. The area distribution of a number of topics is presented (both in decares (1 decare = 0,1 hectare) and percent). Soil properties vary between different regions in Norway, mostly due to a big variety between the soil forming factors. This variation must be taken into account in the management of the soil resource, for the soil to maintain the functions for producing food in a sustainable way.

THE ROLE OF SOIL BIOLOGY IN CROP NUTRITION

| Type artikkel: Rapport

Kategori: Humus, Jordbiologi, Matjord

It is vital to support many aspects of soil biology in order to maintain conditions which are beneficial to crop nutrition. The existence of just one organism within the soil can support many others, so a holistic approach to encourage soil biology helps maintain the complex food web; such an approach can be found in agroecological principles.

Proximal Soil Sensing – A Contribution for Species Habitat Distribution Modelling of Earthworms in Agricultural Soils?

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Humus, Jordbiologi, Matjord

Earthworms are important for maintaining soil ecosystem functioning and serve as indicators of soil fertility. However, detection of earthworms is time-consuming, which hinders the assessment of earthworm abundances with high sampling density over entire fields. Recent developments of mobile terrestrial sensor platforms for proximal soil sensing (PSS) provided new tools for collecting dense spatial information of soils using various sensing principles. Yet, the potential of PSS for assessing earthworm habitats is largely unexplored. This study investigates whether PSS data contribute to the spatial prediction of earthworm abundances in species distribution models of agricultural soils.

Rice Yield and the Fate of Fertilizer Nitrogen as Affected by Addition of Earthworm Casts Collected from Oilseed Rape Fields: A Pot Experiment

The mechanism associated with improvement of soil nutritional status by oilseed rape crop, leading to better performance of rice crop, in rice-oilseed rape cropping systems is little known. The present study was aimed to test the hypothesis that earthworm casts produced during oilseed rape-growing season have positive effects on grain yield and fertilizer nitrogen (N) utilization in the subsequent flooded rice crop.

Preventing and remediating degradation of soils in Europe through Land Care

Soils in the European Union are an essential yet often undervalued and degraded resource. Soils deliver numerous important functions and ecosystem services, including, for example, water and nutrient cycling, biomass and food production, or habitats for species. At the same time, soils are affected by a range of degradation processes, in particular: erosion, floods and landslides, loss of soil organic matter, salinisation, contamination, compaction, sealing, and loss of soil biodiversity (COM 2006).

Organic and Biodynamic Management Effects on Soil Biology

Biodynamic agriculture is a unique organic farming system that utilizes, in addition to the common tools of organic agriculture, specific fermented herbal preparations as compost additives and field sprays. The objective of this work was to determine whether biodynamic compost or field spray preparations affect the soil biological community in the short term, beyond the effects of organic management.

Our findings show that the organic strawberry farms produced higher quality fruit and that their higher quality soils may have greater microbial functional capability and resilience to stress. These findings justify additional investigations aimed at detecting and quantifying such effects and their interactions.

Hvem gjør egentlig hva i matjorda?

| Type artikkel: Faktaark

Kategori: Humus, Jordbiologi, Matjord
