Agronomic Evaluation of Biochar, Compost and Biochar-Blended Compost across Different Cropping Systems: Perspective from the European Project FERTIPLUS

This paper reports the results on the agronomic performance of organic amendments in the EU 7th FP project “FERTIPLUS—reducing mineral fertilizers and agro-chemicals by recycling treated organic waste as compost and bio-char”. Four case studies on field-scale application of biochar, compost and biochar-blended compost were established and studied for three consecutive years in four distinct cropping systems and under different agro-climatic conditions in Europe.

Agroforestry for soil health

Healthy soil is one of the most critical resources for the health and sustainability of ecosystems, including agroecosystems. Although the agroforestry community has long been convinced of the soil health benefits of agroforestry practices, many of such practices remain to be fully accepted by the mainstream agriculture community. Agroforestry, as a sustainable land management practice, has shown solid evidence of its role in improving soil quality and health based on at least four decades of data gathered from the world over.

Managing soil fertility and health for quinoa production and weed control in organic systems

Quinoa (Chenpodium quinoa Willd.) could provide a high value crop for organic cropping systems in the Intermountain Western US. This study evaluated quinoa in three cover cropping systems [strip crop (SC), undersown clover (UC), or winter cover crop and tillage (T)] with and without compost (+C or −C) in a split-plot with blocks design.

Risks and opportunities of increasing yields in organic farming. A review

Current organic agriculture performs well in several sustainability domains, like animal welfare, farm profitability and low pesticide use, but yields are commonly lower than in conventional farming. There is now a re-vitalized interest in increasing yields in organic agriculture to provide more organic food for a growing, more affluent population and reduce negative impacts per unit produced. However, past yield increases have been accompanied by several negative side-effects.

Soil quality – A critical review

Sampling and analysis or visual examination of soil to assess its status and use potential is widely practiced from plot to national scales. However, the choice of relevant soil attributes and interpretation of measurements are not straightforward, because of the complexity and site-specificity of soils, legacy effects of previous land use, and trade-offs between ecosystem services. Here we review soil quality and related concepts, in terms of definition, assessment approaches, and indicator selection and interpretation.

Simulating soil fertility management effects on crop yield and soil nitrogen dynamics in field trials under organic farming in Europe

Soil fertility building measures should be explored at the short and long-term for an adequate evaluation of their impact on sustaining yields and of its environmental consequences in crop rotations under organic farming. For such a purpose, process-based crop models are potential useful tools to complement and upscale field observations under a range of soil and climatic conditions.

Møystadfeltet – Norges langvarige gjødslingsforsøk

I 1922 ble norges eldste gjødslingsforsøk anlagt på Hedmark fylkes forsøksgård på Møystad øst for Hamar. Dette var bare et drøyt tiår etter at Norsk Hydro startet salg av norgessalpeter fra fabrikken på Rjukan og hensikten med forsøket var å sammenlikne virkning av den nye mineralgjødsla med tradisjonell husdyrgjødsel. Man var nok særlig interessert i å undersøke hvordan avlingsnivået utviklet seg på lengre sikt. Kunne jordas fruktbarhet opprettholdes med den nye gjødsla?

Proximal Soil Sensing – A Contribution for Species Habitat Distribution Modelling of Earthworms in Agricultural Soils?

Earthworms are important for maintaining soil ecosystem functioning and serve as indicators of soil fertility. However, detection of earthworms is time-consuming, which hinders the assessment of earthworm abundances with high sampling density over entire fields. Recent developments of mobile terrestrial sensor platforms for proximal soil sensing (PSS) provided new tools for collecting dense spatial information of soils using various sensing principles. Yet, the potential of PSS for assessing earthworm habitats is largely unexplored. This study investigates whether PSS data contribute to the spatial prediction of earthworm abundances in species distribution models of agricultural soils.
