25 sorter og foredlingslinjer av vårhvete ble sammenliknet i feltforsøk på to lokaliteter i Nord-Trøndelag i 2017 og 2018, med økologiske dyrkingsbetingelser. Utvalget inneholdt sorter som er i bruk i økologisk dyrking til håndverksbaking i Trøndelag (Dala landhvete, Fram II), enkelte andre eldre norske sorter (Norrøna, Møystad, Runar), to svenske sorter med litt annen glutenkvalitet enn moderne norsk hvete (Polkka, Sport), og Mirakel og Seniorita som var vanlige handelssorter i Norge i 2017 og 2018.

Flerårige blomsterstriper – et verktøy til bedre skadedyrkontroll i epledyrking

Strategier i ekologisk produktion i Sverige för att öka resiliens mot extrem torka

The summer year 2018 was extremely hot and dry in Sweden. Pasture crops dried down and cattle had to graze in the forest or on bushed land not cultivated for a long time. The harvest was extremely low for all crops. Swedish agriculture is adapted to weather variations but due to climate change extreme weather conditions are expected to occur more frequent, such as too much or lack of rain. We have to answer question about what knowledge and measure the farmer use to handle the drought and produce crops, milk and beef.

FUTURE NORDIC DIETS

The global food system causes large emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the environment. Livestock are responsible for a large part of these emissions and take up most of the agricultural land for grazing and feed production while only making a more limited contribution to the global food supply. In this project, we have used an agricultural mass flow model to assess two future food system scenarios for the Nordic countries Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden (hereafter “the Nordic countries”).

Final report for the CORE Organic Plus funded project “Innovative design and management to boost functional biodiversity of organic orchards EcoOrchard”

Orchards are perennial cultures, and especially in organic fruit production it is essential to design and manage orchards in a way which favours predators and parasitoids over pests. Increasing plant biodiversity and habitats in such a way that beneficials are favoured is called Functional (Agro-)Biodiversity (FAB). The value of FAB for reducing pesticide use in fruit production is generally acknowledged, and many organic fruit growers try to increase it in spite of a shortage of information on FAB, economical and technical challenges and lack of situation-specific, detailed advice.

Links between profitability, nitrogen surplus, greenhouse gas emissions, and energy intensity on organic and conventional dairy farms

This study examines the relationships between profitability, nitrogen (N) surplus, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), and energy intensity and factors influencing these relationships in dairy farming. In-depth data from 10 conventional and 8 organic dairy farms in Western Norway were analyzed. Organic farms had lower N surplus per hectare (local, on-farm) and per unit output (global, cradle-to-farm-gate), and lower estimated GHG emissions and energy intensity per unit output, whereas labor input and farm profits did not differ.

The main goal of the project has been to develop innovative sustainable processing and packaging technologies to meet the growing consumer demand and boost the manufacturing of safe organic berry products with high nutritional quality and low environmental impact. The aim has been to evaluate technologies to naturally extend the shelf-life of fresh organic berries and to process berries into a wide variety of value added products. Several solutions and technologies for extending shelf life and the overall quality of fresh and processed berry and fruit products have been identified and developed during the three years of the project.

Life cycle analysis of organic tomato production and supply in Sweden

Using life cycle analysis (LCA) method with SimaPro8.2 LCA software, the cumulative energy demand (CED) and global warming potential (GWP100) were investigated within the system boundary of cradle-to-consumer gate.

Correlations between Polyacetylene Concentrations in Carrot (Daucus carota L.) and Various Soil Parameters

This study assessed the concentrations of three falcarinol-type polyacetylenes (falcarinol, falcarindiol, falcarindiol-3-acetate) in carrots and the correlations between these and different soil traits. A total of 144 carrot samples, from three different harvests taken a single season, were analysed in terms of their polyacetylene concentrations and root development.

Crop traits drive soil carbon sequestration under organic farming

1. Organic farming (OF) enhances top soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in croplands compared with conventional farming (CF), which can contribute to sequester C. As farming system differences in the amount of C inputs to soil (e.g. fertilization and crop residues) are not enough to explain such increase, shifts in crop residue traits important for soil C losses such as litter decomposition may also play a role.

Risks and opportunities of increasing yields in organic farming. A review.

Current organic agriculture performs well in several sustainability domains, like animal welfare, farm profitability and low
pesticide use, but yields are commonly lower than in conventional farming. There is now a re-vitalized interest in increasing
yields in organic agriculture to provide more organic food for a growing, more affluent population and reduce negative impacts per unit produced. However, past yield increases have been accompanied by several negative side-effects. Here, we review risks and opportunities related to a broad range of sustainability domains associated with increasing yields in organic agriculture in the Northern European context.

Teknik för småskalig grönsaksodling

Science-based knowledge attained through dedicated research is required to strengthen organic food and farming as a means to solve future challenges.

Human health implications of organic food and organic agriculture: a comprehensive review

This review summarises existing evidence on the impact of organic food on human health. It compares organic vs. conventional food production with respect to parameters important to human health and discusses the potential impact of organic management practices with an emphasis on EU conditions. Organic food consumption may reduce the risk of allergic disease and of overweight and obesity, but the evidence is not conclusive due to likely residual confounding, as consumers of organic food tend to have healthier lifestyles overall. However, animal experiments suggest that identically composed feed from organic or conventional production impacts in different ways on growth and development.

The challenge of imbalanced nutrient flows in organic farming systems: A study of organic greenhouses in Southern Germany

Organic greenhouse vegetable production is characterized by very high nutrient demands within short growing periods and high nutrient exports via products sold. Therefore, meeting crop nutrient demands and maintaining long-term sustainability in these systems is highly challenging. To gain insight in current practices this study assessed fertilization strategies and nutrient flows of ten organic horticultural farms (22 greenhouses and polytunnels) in Southwest Germany belonging to the two organic farming associations Bioland and Demeter (biodynamic) for a cropping period of three years.

PROTECFRUIT

Projektets formål er at bidrage til øget udbytte og areal i den økologiske frugtavl, reducere spild og minimere pesticidbelastning samt øge tilgængelighed af økologiske æbler og pærer. Udbyttet i økologisk æble- og pæreproduktion er mindre end 33% af udbyttet i en konventionel produktion pga. mindre frugter, svampesygdomme og skadedyr på trods af, at "naturlige" pesticider anvendes hyppigt. Med henblik på at reducere sprøjtning og øge udbytte har regntag over trærækken vist gode resultater. Dækning ændrer mikroklimaet og kan påvirke planternes vækst og frugtkvalitet, som derfor undersøges.

Økologisk landbruk og klimagasser – metan, lystgass og CO2

Alle former for landbruk bidrar til utslipp av klimagasser, særlig av lystgass og metan. Måling av klimagassutslipp fra landbruket og lagring av karbon i jord er komplisert og er både tids- og stedsavhengig. Offisiell statistikk for landbruk omfatter ikke alle utslipp som hører med i landbruksproduksjonen, som utslipp ved produksjon av kunstgjødsel. Innhold av karbon i dyrkajord regnes heller ikke med. Kostholdsammensetning og matsvinn betyr dessuten mye for samlet utslippsmengde fra matproduksjon. Ved sammenligning av driftsformer er det viktig å ha med alle faktorer av betydning for klimapåvirkning.

Organic farming enhances soil microbial abundance and activity—A meta-analysis and meta-regression

Population growth and climate change challenge our food and farming systems and provide arguments for an increased intensification of agriculture. A promising option is eco-functional intensification through organic farming, an approach based on using and enhancing internal natural resources and processes to secure and improve agricultural productivity, while minimizing negative environmental impacts.

Delightful organic apple

Apple are a popular fruit, they promote health and are the most produced fruit in Switzerland. However, in order to produce them economically and sustainably under organic conditions, new and robust varieties are needed. Conventionally bred varieties are generally only resistant against scab and fire blight. For organic farming, further resistance against diseased and physiological disturbances like sooty blotch, Marssonina, Gloeosporium or biennial bearing is very important. Breeding a new apple variety is cost- and labour-intensive, and takes many years. This project will scientifically support the biodynamic breeding initiative Poma Culta and lead it into the future.

Bringebærdyrking i økologisk landbruk

Bringebærdyrking har hatt kraftig framgang i Noreg siste åra og er nest etter jordbær den viktigaste bær- veksten. Den økologiske produksjonen utgjer som for bærartene elles enno ein svært liten del. Men mange forbrukarar ønskjer å kjøpa usprøyta bringebær og det bør difor vera rom for ein vesentleg større pro- duksjon her i landet. Prisen forbrukaren vil betala for økologiske bær er sjølvsagt avgjerande for lønsemda til produsenten. Økologisk dyrking av bringebær er krevjande og ein må normalt rekna med litt større variasjon og gjerne litt lågare avlingar enn for konven- sjonell dyrking.

Tiltak mot skadegjerarar i økologisk bærdyrking: Jordbær

Kampen mot ugras og skadegjerarar er som oftast den største utfordringa i økologisk bærdyrking. Førebyggjande tiltak som bruk av friskt plantemateriale, korte omløp og å fjerna smittekjelder rundt feltet er særleg viktig. Det kan i tillegg vera rett å gjera mindre endringar i dyrkingsopplegget for å redusera faren for åtak av viktige skadegjerar.

Litteraturstudie av miljöpåverkan från konventionellt och ekologiskt producerade livsmedel

Den här rapporten samman- ställer skillnaderna i miljöpåverkan mellan ekologiskt och konventionellt producerade livsmedel och är ett kunskapsunderlag som Livsmedelsverket kan använda för att belysa frågan om det finns några livsmedelsgrupper där ekologiskt alternativt konventionellt bör lyftas fram. Arbetet har fokuserat på ett antal större livsmedelsgrupper och prioriterat studier som har använt livscykelanalys, LCA.
