Soil health assessment: A critical review of current methodologies and a proposed new approach

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Matjord, Regenerativt landbruk

The wellbeing of soils is crucial for securing food production worldwide. The soil health (SH) concept has been introduced due to an evolving understanding that soil is not just a growing medium for crops but that it provides a foundation for other essential ecosystem services (ES). The SH concept requires development of a holistic index for reliable and quantitative assessment of soil wellbeing related to the effects of different soil management practices and land uses.

Soil quality – A critical review

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Matjord

Sampling and analysis or visual examination of soil to assess its status and use potential is widely practiced from plot to national scales. However, the choice of relevant soil attributes and interpretation of measurements are not straightforward, because of the complexity and site-specificity of soils, legacy effects of previous land use, and trade-offs between ecosystem services. Here we review soil quality and related concepts, in terms of definition, assessment approaches, and indicator selection and interpretation.

Examining multi-functionality for crop yield and ecosystem services in five systems of agroecological intensification

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Agroøkologi, Presisjonsjordbruk, Økologisk landbruk

Agroecological intensification (AEI) integrates ecological principles and biodiversity management into farming systems with the aims of increasing farm productivity, reducing dependency on external inputs, and sustaining or enhancing ecosystem services. This review develops an analytic framework to characterize the fulfilment of these objectives by documenting the co-occurrence of positive, neutral, and negative outcomes for crop yield and nine regulating ecosystem services.

Agricultural ecosystems and their services: the vanguard of sustainability?

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Klima og miljø

Sustainable Development Goals offer an opportunity to improve human well-being while conserving natural resources. Ecosystem services highlight human well-being benefits ecosystems, including agricultural ecosystems, provides. Whereas agricultural systems produce the majority of our food, they drive significant environmental degradation. This tension between development and environmental conservation objectives is not an immutable outcome as agricultural systems are simultaneously dependents, and providers of ecosystem services.

A Gardener’s Influence on Urban Soil Quality

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Matjord, Urbant landbruk

Gardens are hot spots for urban biodiversity and provide habitats for many plant and animal species, both above- and below-ground. Furthermore, gardens provide a wide range of ecosystem services, including carbon (C) storage and nutrient cycling. Although the soil is the foundation of sustainable gardens providing those ecosystem services, very little is known about the consequences of garden management on soil quality.

DEMONSTRATING STRATEGIES FOR ORGANIC AND LOW-INPUT FARMING TO MITIGATE AND ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE

| Type artikkel: Rapport

Kategori: Agroforestry, Agroøkologi, Klima og miljø, Økologisk landbruk

Climate change affects our entire planet, including Europe. It is a phenomenon that is closely linked to rising Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and that is already having visible detrimental effects on human activities, such as farming. The climate will keep on changing and temperatures will keep on rising, which leaves us with the questions: how does climate change affect our food supply, how do food systems affect climate change, and what can we do about it?

Ecosystem services across the aquatic–terrestrial boundary: Linking ponds to pollination

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Insekter, Pollinerende insekter

Many small farmland ponds are built for nutrient retention, the conservation of biodiversity or both, yet they are relatively neglected habitats. For example, little is known about the potential for ponds to influence populations of beneficial terrestrial insects, deliver ecosystem services across the aquatic–terrestrial boundary and affect crop yield in insect-pollinated cash crops.

A global synthesis of the effects of diversified farming systems on arthropod diversity within fields and across agricultural landscapes

| Type artikkel: Publisert studie

Kategori: Biologisk mangfold, Produksjonsmetoder

Agricultural intensification is a leading cause of global biodiversity loss, which can reduce the provisioning of ecosystem services in managed ecosystems. Organic farming and plant diversification are farm management schemes that may mitigate potential ecological harm by increasing species richness and boosting related ecosystem services to agroecosystems. What remains unclear is the extent to which farm management schemes affect biodiversity components other than species richness, and whether impacts differ across spatial scales and landscape contexts.

Gräsbaserad effektiv nötkreatursproduktion – effekter på ekosystemtjänster och ekonomi

| Type artikkel: Forskningsprosjekt

Kategori: Husdyr, Kjøtt, Melk, Økonomi

A large share of agricultural land is used for cattle production. This land use is important for ecosystem services and biodiversity. Abandonment of grazed pastureland is a reality. Consumer interest is growing for environmentally friendly produced milk and beef with high animal welfare standards; these aspects often come together in grass-based production systems with much grazing. If this trend continues, a significant share of cattle population can be raised in grass-based certified production systems in future.
