Planteproduksjon avhenger av tilførsel av næringsstoffer i gjødsel, blant annet fosfor (P), for å vedlikeholde næringsstatusen i jord over tid. Kilden til P i mineralgjødsel er utvunnet fosfatstein, en ikke-fornybar global ressurs som har blitt tilført i overskudd til landbruksjord i Vest-Europa gjennom årtier. I en mer bærekraftig matproduksjon må P brukes mer effektivt for å redusere utvinningen av fosfatstein og redusere risikoen for tap av P som er forbundet med akkumulering av P i jord.

Agronomic Evaluation of Biochar, Compost and Biochar-Blended Compost across Different Cropping Systems: Perspective from the European Project FERTIPLUS

This paper reports the results on the agronomic performance of organic amendments in the EU 7th FP project “FERTIPLUS—reducing mineral fertilizers and agro-chemicals by recycling treated organic waste as compost and bio-char”. Four case studies on field-scale application of biochar, compost and biochar-blended compost were established and studied for three consecutive years in four distinct cropping systems and under different agro-climatic conditions in Europe.

Comparison of the environmental performance of different treatment scenarios for the main phosphorus recycling sources

Efficient phosphorus (P) recycling from rural and urban areas is becoming an increasing issue due to the scarcity of natural P deposits. Based on a life cycle assessment (LCA), we analyzed the environmental performance of 17 different P supply and recycling approaches from urban wastes, biosolids and slaughterhouse wastes compared with the two conventional inorganic fertilizers phosphate rock and triple superphosphate.

Phosphorus bioavailability of sewage sludge-based recycled fertilizers

Six phosphorus (P) fertilizers recycled from sewage sludge [Struvite SSL, Struvite AirPrex,P-RoC, Mephrec, Pyrolysis coal and Ash (Mg-SSA)] were tested for their plant availability in potted soil of pH 7.2 under greenhouse conditions. The crop sequence simulated a rotation of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), maize (Zea maize L.), and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.).

Waste products as alternative phosphorus fertilisers part I: inorganic P species affect fertilisation effects depending on soil pH

One of the bottlenecks to efficient phosphorus (P) recycling is limited understanding of the relationships between inorganic P species in waste products and their P fertilisation effects. In this study, we characterised inorganic P species in seven waste products (two biomass ashes, meat bone meal, fish sludge, catering waste and two food waste-based digestate products) and two manure products (dairy and chicken manure) by: (1) Sequential chemical fractionation, (2) X-ray powder diffraction and (3) solid-state 31P MAS-NMR spectroscopy.

Ecological Recycling Agriculture to Enhance Agro-Ecosystem Services in the Baltic Sea Region: Guidelines for Implementation

Eutrophication caused by agriculture is an increasing ecological threat to the Baltic Sea. Modern, resource-efficient farming systems based on integrated plant and animal production, effective nutrient recycling and low external inputs can enhance multiple agro-ecosystem services, resulting in reduced pollution. Practical examples of such farming systems are not widespread. Therefore, the Baltic Ecological Recycling Agriculture and Society (BERAS) Implementation project aimed to foster this systemic shift.

Optimising the utilisation of agricultural manure for biogas production : a model based on the county of Vestfold in Norway

The threat of climate-change and the harm it is doing to the Earth has been known for a long time, and the worlds countries have come together to try to limit the damages humanity is doing. The result is multiple international conventions and agreements, most recently the Paris-agreement in 2016. Norway ratified the agreement and implemented the goals in November 2016, and have since searched for solutions to reduce the overall emissions of harmful gasses to the atmosphere. One of these goals was to produce more renewable energy.

Ensilering av frasorterte poteter og gulrøtter – fra tap til fôr med tilleggsverdi

Omtrent en fjerde del av potetene og gulrøttene som pakkeriene mottar blir sortert ut fordi de ikke oppfyller kravene til salg av fersk mat. Disse restråvarene har lav økonomisk verdi til tross for god fôrverdi. I dag leveres frasorterte råvarer til matindustri og brukes som fôr til drøvtyggere. Målet med prosjektet var å finne ut om potet og gulrot ensilert med probiotiske bakterier kan ha et potensiale som fôrprodukt.

The Political Ecology of Pee and Poo – Peak Phosphorus and the Metabolic Rift in Discursive Struggles

This thesis investigates how the metabolic rift and peak phosphorus are represented in Norwegian media and policy documents. The investigation is done with the use of critical discourse analysis. The material investigated consists of 28 texts from Norwegian newspapers and two documents from the Norwegian Environment Agency.

Sustainable recycling of organic waste resources in the future bioeconomy

The intended future bioeconomy requires increased utilisation of available bioresources. As part of this, optimal utilisation of nutrients in waste resources as fertiliser in agriculture will be indispensable. However, waste resources are complex materials that are strongly varying in terms of composition, quantity and quality. Therefore, several barriers will have to be overcome to realise efficient nutrient cycling. For example, large amounts of water in many waste resources can result in difficulties related to handling and application as fertiliser, and that transport is costly over large distances. Further, unknown quality of waste resources as fertiliser is often hindering efficient and environmentally friendly use. Waste resources can contain environmental pollutants and pathogenic microorganisms. Especially microplastics have lately received gained focus. Also, acceptance of waste resources as fertiliser by farmers is unknown, and nutrient recycling can lead to environmental problem shifting.
