Risks and opportunities of increasing yields in organic farming. A review.

Current organic agriculture performs well in several sustainability domains, like animal welfare, farm profitability and low
pesticide use, but yields are commonly lower than in conventional farming. There is now a re-vitalized interest in increasing
yields in organic agriculture to provide more organic food for a growing, more affluent population and reduce negative impacts per unit produced. However, past yield increases have been accompanied by several negative side-effects. Here, we review risks and opportunities related to a broad range of sustainability domains associated with increasing yields in organic agriculture in the Northern European context.

Reducing food’s environmental impacts through producers and consumers

To identify solutions that are effective under this heterogeneity, we consolidated data covering five environmental indicators; 38,700 farms; and 1600 processors, packaging types, and retailers. Impact can vary 50-fold among producers of the same product, creating substantial mitigation opportunities.

Impact of agronomy practices on the effects of reduced tillage systems on CH4 and N2O emissions from agricultural fields: A global meta-analysis

The effect of no- and reduced tillage (NT/RT) on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission was highly variable and may depend on other agronomy practices. However, how the other practices affect the effect of NT/RT on GHG emission remains elusive. Therefore, we conducted a global meta-analysis (including 49 papers with 196 comparisons) to assess the effect of five options (i.e. cropping system, crop residue management, split application of N fertilizer, irrigation, and tillage duration) on the effect of NT/RT on CH4 and N2O emissions from agricultural fields.

Algae to Future (A2F) – Alger for fremtiden

Hovedformålet med studien har vært å lære mer om landbruket i Norge, og søke å forstå mer av det rommet som tilsynelatende er et avvik mellom status i dag og behovet for fremtiden når det gjelder lokal matproduksjon, i lys av den negative trenden med gårdsbruk som går ut av drift og migrasjon fra landsbygda.

GrassRobotics – A novel adaptation strategy for forage production under wet growing conditions – robotization and high quality forages

This project will develop a sustainable production system for forage production using a lightweight robot and novel seed mixtures. Due to wet growing conditions and commonly used heavy tractors and bailing equipment, the time windows for ley harvesting are shortened during the last decades, resulting in forages of lower forage nutritive quality than necessary. Also, soil compaction and less optimal conditions for plant growth is a consequence in a situation where the dry matter yield in grassland is lower than expected from the plant nutrients supplied.

Crop management affects pollinator attractiveness and visitation in oilseed rape

Wild Pollinators Enhance Fruit Set of Crops Regardless of Honey Bee Abundance

The diversity and abundance of wild insect pollinators have declined in many agricultural landscapes. Whether such declines reduce crop yields, or are mitigated by managed pollinators such as honey bees, is unclear. We found universally positive associations of fruit set with flower visitation by wild insects in 41 crop systems worldwide. In contrast, fruit set increased significantly with flower visitation by honey bees in only 14% of the systems surveyed.

Bee pollination improves crop quality, shelf life and commercial value

Pollination improves the yield of most crop species and contributes to one-third of global crop production, but comprehensive benefits including crop quality are still unknown. Hence, pollination is underestimated by international policies, which is particularly alarming in times of agricultural intensification and diminishing pollination services. In this study, exclusion experiments with strawberries showed bee pollination to improve fruit quality, quantity and market value compared with wind and self-pollination.

Contribution of insect pollinators to crop yield and quality varies with agricultural intensification

However, basic information on the level of pollinator dependence and pollinator contribution to yield is lacking for many crops. Even less is known about how insect pollination affects crop quality. Given that habitat loss and agricultural intensification are known to decrease pollinator richness and abundance, there is a need to assess the consequences for different components of crop production.

Flea beetles are serious insect pests in spring oilseed rape. After neonicotinoid seed treatments were restricted, no effective chemical control methods are currently available for flea beetle control. Crop protection has therefore become a serious limiting factor for growing the crop. In an ongoing research project we find that by applying principles of integrated pest management, spring oilseed rape can be grown despite the lack of effective chemical control.

Environmental impacts of combined milk and meat production in Norway according to a life cycle assessment with expanded system boundaries

The environmental burdens from combined milk and meat production in Norway have been studied. A model of three typical farms was constructed to represent the three most important regions for dairy production in Norway (central, central southeast and southwest). Processes from cradle to farm gate were covered in the assessment, including all activities on the farm, along with the production of machinery, equipment, buildings, diesel, oil, fertilizer, lime, seeds, pesticides, detergents, plastic, silage additive, medicines and related transport. The results were given for the impact categories global warming potential (GWP), fossil depletion, freshwater ecotoxicity, freshwater eutrophication, human toxicity, marine ecotoxicity, marine eutrophication, ozone depletion, agricultural land occupation, photochemical oxidant formation, terrestrial acidification and terrestrial ecotoxicity.

Community supported agriculture in urban settings: A way for better understanding and implementation of sustainability – a Norwegian experience

Norway covers an abundant wilderness, only 3 % of the land are cultivated. Population is scarce many places of the country, but like trends elsewhere, there are a concentration towards more urban settings.. Urban citizens take action for future sustainable development through producing some of their own food. Politics protect land resources for agriculture, but agricultural areas are still decreasing. The official goal of 15 % production and market shares of organic products in 2020 can stimulate urban farming. Literature states how people carries out top goals for sustainability in a humble practical approach. The eagerness to grow food is underlined by the growth of community supported agriculture (CSA) from a single one in 2006 to more than 50 in 2016.

Kortikosteron i fjær – En mulig velferdsindikator?

I dette prosjektet har vi utredet om kortikosteron-målinger i fjær fra fjørfe kan være egnet som velferdsindikator. Vi har sammenligna tre besetninger: En liten økologisk eggproduksjonsbesetning og to slaktekyllingbesetninger med ordinære kyllinghus, syv-åtte innsett per år og med tilnærmet lik utforming av hus og driftsopplegg. Det ble tatt fjærprøver (ryggfjær) fra 21 levende, 16 selvdøde og ti avlivede, totalt 47 fjørfe, av ulik alder. Analysene ble gjort ved NTNU Ålesund. Dataene ble sammenlignet i en enveis variansanalysemodell.

Økonomi i saueholdet ved tilgang på ekstra innmarksbeite

Prosjektet «BeiteRessurs» har vært ledet av Norsk Institutt for Bioøkonomi (NIBIO). Norsk senter for økologisk landbruk (NORSØK) og Senter for bygdeforskning har vært samarbeidsparter. Prosjektet ble gjennomført 2013-2016. Hovedmålet var å teste mulighetene for å ta i bruk marginale
jordbruksområder som har ligget brakk, til beite for sau. Denne rapporten tar for seg de økonomiske konsekvensene av å ta i bruk et nedlagt innmarksbeite til vår- og høstbeite på sauegarder i Midt-Norge.

Nedbygging av jordbruksareal

Jordbruksarealet i Norge utgjør bare 3,7 prosent av landarealet. Mange av de mest produktive arealene våre ligger i, eller i nærheten av, tettsteder i stor vekst. Gjennom mange år har dette ført til at jordbruksareal har blitt bygd ned til fordel for boliger, veger, industri og andre formål. Nedbygging av jordbruksareal til andre formål enn landbruk må ha kommunal godkjenning gjennom plan- og bygningsloven eller jordloven. Jordvern er stadig på den politiske dagsorden, og konkrete nasjonale mål er satt for vern av matjorda som et felles gode.

Finding key parameters for improved forage utilization and lowered methane emissions in dairy cows

Successiv utveckling av hållbara odlingssystem i långliggande grönsaksförsök

Det långliggande odlingssystemförsöket i Önnestad med två konventionella och tre ekologiska växtföljder hade 2006-2015 fokus på grönsaksodling. Frilevande nematoder och rotgallnematoder är ett stort problem i grönsaksodling, både konventionell och ekologisk. När kvaliteten hos konventionellt och ekologiskt odlade grönsaker jämförs är det inte ovanligt att olika sorter jämförs med varandra. I detta projekt analyserades förekomsten av rotgall-, rotsårs-, stubbrots- och nålnematoder (Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus, Trichodorus och Paratrichodorus samt Longidorus) i jordprover från försöksplatsen 2012-2016.

Study of the control exerted by natural enemies over aphids and scales in apple orchards and the management factors affecting the natural regulation of pests they provide

Meetings with the participation of growers, advisors and researchers in the apple growing region of Skåne (Äppelträffen, 2011, 2012) revealed that the incidence of aphid and scale pests had increased during the past years. Sudden outbreaks of these secondary pests prompted significant additional intervention mainly with chemical insecticides. The reasons underlying more regular and severe outbreaks are unknown but the general assumption is that they are related to the adoption of new insecticides in 2008.

Övervakning av Drosophila suzukii och riskbedömning för svensk bärodling

The invasive fruit fly, Drosophila suzukii (spotted wing drosophila, SWD), is an economic threat in Sweden to soft fruit and berry production. Since its detection in Europe in 2008, SWD has rapidly spread across Europe, infesting a wide range of cultivated and wild fruits and berries, with up to 100% damage reported in berries and cherries (Asplen et al. 2015). From its first detection reported in 2014 in southern Sweden (Jordbruksverket, JBV), the population had spread with damage reported in post-harvest raspberries in 2015, and a significant increase in the number of flies throughout Skåne in 2016 and 2017 (Jordbruksverket). In addition, SWD was found in almost every fruit and berry crop in southern Sweden, including raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, plums, elderberries and red grapes, and was detected for the first time north of Skåne (Jordbruksverket).

Gräsbaserad effektiv nötkreatursproduktion – effekter på ekosystemtjänster och ekonomi

If this trend continues, a significant share of cattle population can be raised in grass-based certified production systems in future.

Tindved – en vekst for fremtiden?

Tindved (Hippophae ramnoides L.) er en sterkt grenet, tornet busk hjemmehørende i tempererte regioner av Europa og Asia som produserer næringsrike orange/gule frukter. Den har viktige funksjoner som næringskilde og som jordforbedrer. Fruktene inneholder høye konsentrasjoner av blant annet karbohydrater, proteiner, organiske syrer, aminosyrer og vitaminer med viktig kommersiell verdi. Tindved er en nitrogen-fikserende plante med et omfattende rotsystem og begge disse egenskaper gjører at planten blir brukt til planting i næringsfattig jord og ustabil grunn, og som pionerart i degradert jord.

The quality of leguminous vegetables as influenced by preharvest factors

The cultivation of most legumes, aims to the production of either dry seeds consumed by humans, also known as pulses, or animal fodder. However, some legumes are cultivated for fresh consumption either as pods or as immature seeds. The economically most important legumes consumed as vegetables are green pods of common bean, cowpea, faba bean, snow pea (mangetout) and green pea seeds. As a rule, the legume vegetables are consumed after cooking and in many countries, they may be used to cover primary nutritional needs, because their protein content is high in comparison with most other vegetables.

Could the artificial inoculation of AM fungi improve the benefits of using pea (Pissum sativum L) plants for soil amendment purposes in greenhouses?

The study aimed to investigate the effects of commercially available AMF inoculate (Glomus sp. mixture) on the growth and the nutrient acquisition of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants. Inoculated (AMF+) and non-inoculated (AMF-) pea plants were subjected to two levels of NaCl salinity (0 and 50 mM NaCl). Several times during the growing cycle, randomly selected plants were analyzed for dry matter of roots and the aboveground biomass. Plant tissue samples were analyzed for N, P and K concentration and the total uptake, specific absorption rate (SAR) and specific utilization rate (SUR) of these elements were calculated.

Suppression of the activity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi by the soil microbiota

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonise roots of most plants; their extra-radical mycelium (ERM) extends into the soil and acquires nutrients for the plant. The ERM coexists with soil microbial communities and it is unresolved whether these communities stimulate or suppress the ERM activity. This work studied the prevalence of suppressed ERM activity and identified main components behind the suppression.

Human health implications of organic food and organic agriculture: a comprehensive review

This review summarises existing evidence on the impact of organic food on human health. It compares organic vs. conventional food production with respect to parameters important to human health and discusses the potential impact of organic management practices with an emphasis on EU conditions. Organic food consumption may reduce the risk of allergic disease and of overweight and obesity, but the evidence is not conclusive due to likely residual confounding, as consumers of organic food tend to have healthier lifestyles overall. However, animal experiments suggest that identically composed feed from organic or conventional production impacts in different ways on growth and development.

Prospective association between consumption frequency of organic food and body weight change, risk of overweight or obesity: results from the NutriNet-Santé Study

For å imøtekomme dette målet blir økt forbruk av økologiske
produkter i offentlige storhusholdninger trukket frem som en viktig strategi. Et parallelt prosjekt underordnet det nasjonale målet har vært ”økoløft i kommuner”. Sykehjemmet som jeg i denne studien har undersøkt ligger i økokommunen Tingvoll i Møre og Romsdal. Som et resultat av dette valgte sykehjemmets kjøkken å legge om til økologisk mat.

Mångfunktionella, lokala odlingssystem Etablering av modern agroforestry i Sverige 2012–2016

Vår vision är att lantbruket skall bidra till en hållbar värld och vara en ”plusfaktor” i den utvecklingen. Vi människor gör anspråk på en allt större del av planetens landyta och hav. Därmed påverkar vi idag alla ekosystem på jorden liksom hela planetens klimat. Därför är det lika viktigt att bidra positivt till planetens livgivande funktioner som att producera hög skörd. Till exempel behöver det landskap som ger oss vår mat också ge boplats, skydd och föda till vilda växter och djur. Dessutom behöver ett överskott av koldioxid bindas in i mark och växter för att minska växthuseffekten. Lantbruket behöver också producera sin egen energi, bygga en levande och bördig jord och recirkulera de näringsämnen som växterna behöver.

Begränsningar och möjligheter för skogsträdgårdsodling i svenskt klimat

Intensifieringen av jordbruket har lett till förluster av biologisk mångfald, degradering av mark och vatten samt stora utsläpp av växthusgaser. Det är av stor vikt att vi hittar tekniker för framtidens jordbruk som istället har en positiv inverkan på miljön. Målet med detta forskningsprojekt är att undersöka om agroforestrytekniken skogsträdgårdsodling, som bygger på en hög diversitet av perenna växter och låg skötselintensitet, kan vara ett exempel på sådana system.

To meet the environmental challenges that are presently confronting society, the narrow focus on agricultural production needs to be altered to one that places equal value on the generation of crucial ecosystem services. Current research shows that perennial intercropping systems such as agroforestry may be a feasible alternative.

Alunskiferjord – Overføring av tungmetaller og radionuklider til mat

Alunskiferjord inneholder større mengder potensielt helseskadelige sporstoffer enn annen jord (halvmetaller som arsen, tungmetaller som kadmium og radionuklider som radium). Disse tas opp i planter i varierende grad. Hvor mye som tas opp er avhengig av sporstoffenes iboende egenskaper, av ulike planters evne til å ta opp disse, og av dyrkingspraksis. Det er for eksempel godt kjent at kalking kan redusere opptak av de fleste tungmetaller. Likeledes kan ulike gjødseltyper påvirke opptaket ved at de har ulik evne til å forsure rotsonen eller gjøre denne mer alkalisk.
